I like to stretch my miles with American Airlines so I usually go for the ‘MileSAAver awards level 1 (Off-Peak)’ it has the following date restrictions but requires the least amount of points.

■Hawaii: January 12 – March 13, August 22 – December 15: 35,000 points round trip

■The Caribbean and Mexico: September 7 – November 14: 25,000 points round trip

■Central America, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela: January 16 – June 14, September 7 – November 14: 30,000 points round trip

■Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay: March 1 – May  31, August 16 – November 30: 40,000 points round trip

■Europe: October 15 – May 15; Japan and South Korea: October 1 – April 30 40,000 – 50,000 points round trip

Here is the award chart for all 5 categories (points are for one way travel)

What you should know about American Airlines:

  • They allow one way bookings which means you can fly into one airport, but leave from another. So fly into London, stay a few days (it’s a great city), then take the 2.5 hour train ride to Paris (we are planning on it) hang out there for a bit, then fly home from there. Or, fly into Shannon airport, explore Ireland and then fly out of Dublin. It’s a great perk that many other airlines do not offer.
  • If you fly American Airlines metal they do not charge fuel surcharges (unlike some of their partner flights)

Don’t hesitate, credit card offers can end at any time.
