If you were denied a credit card, or you just know you have bad credit, start with ordering your credit reports.

There are three major credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and Transunion. You are entitled to one free credit report from each agency once a year. Here is the annual-report-request-form. You only need one form for all three agencies.

When you get your reports, you’re going to just have to dive in and fix what you can. www.Credit boards.com is an excellent resource.

The next thing you can do is work on increasing your credit score

FICO scores range from 350 to 850 you can get an idea of what cards you are eligible for at www.creditkarma.com/shop/creditcards You can monitor your monthly credit score for free at www.creditsesame.com. This is not as accurate as an official credit report, but it does update monthly.

Tips to establish or rebuild your credit score:

• sign up for a secured credit card like open sky visa, it will report to all three credit bureaus (Equifax, Trans-Union & Experian)
• charge only up to 30% of the available credit on the card monthly & pay off in full every month.
• You want to keep your oldest credit card for longer financial history
